Current Introduction: July 2009

It’s true, I am moving to Toronto.

As for my career history, I’ve done account management, design and planning work in enterprise computer networking, and numerous roles in technology start up and artistic ventures. I suppose in varying degrees I have entrepreneurial, technological and creative qualities.

Currenty I am enjoying a relaxing summer, with some volunteer work and minimal commercial work.  I’ve taken on small snippets of advisory work with media companies and early stage start ups that I like mostly because I’m leaving and will miss the people.  I am not certain if I will be looking for a new venture or employment in Toronto, I plan to play that by ear.

I’ve been told by numerous peers that my destined future lies in advertising.  I’m not sure if that is true although I am certain that the notion of such a suggestion both flatters and insults me at the same time.  Of the books and peers I’ve encountered regarding the agency world there seems to be a mantra of comon conclusions after spending time in the field.  It seems that the burn out average is 10 years, along with that I will grow scornful, bitter eyes from the mediocre-backdated-vision of western clients, and that my values will fade into the integrity-flexible abyss of emmy-nominated performances to close large clients.  Actually it sounds like my kind of challenge.

I just gathering a list of “must connects” when I land in T.O. as a perminant resident.  That starting point will lead to somewhere I’m sure.

I also plan on spending some time networking in the hacker space community (hacklab.to) to continue with my involvement in community spaces (protospace.ca).

Currently I’m involved in an agency-audio-tool-kit site (sick.fm, not up yet) and an augmented reality project (lensgum.com, also not up yet) with various packs of highly refined geeks.  None of these are very demanding of my time yet, prototypes must me made, companies incorporated, agreements drafted.

I’m not sure if I’ll go to T.O. before the actual move, I have a lot of selfish summer fun activities (long passed due) that I wish to milk before meeting new people again.  The silence that surrounds me won’t last, it must therefor be savored.

All of the ties to active music projects I had been involved with have been put on indefinate-hiatus.  Which means I’m free to do other projects.  Right now I’m taking a break and will pick up on my solo work after I find a nice routine.

Finding suitable housing is a creeping concern.  Finding a new home and moving logistics are the only major chores left for me until I’m free from the dust bowl they call Calgary.

My lady friend is back in town for the summer, and then in fall we move to T.O.!  I am very happy we are in the same city.

As for April’s finished projects, the entire house in Inglewood Calgary has fresh paint (inside) now.  June’s project is outside stuff.  July I put up the place for rent.

Recording for the Avec Zhang record will resume next week.  Must also put up a ton of stuff for sale in lieu of moving.  During the painting I got rid of a ton of stuff.  Now it’s down to Craigslist items and my car for posting and selling.

Tomorrow I drive to Edmonton.

Packing, solitude and snow.

Spent last two days packing upstairs of the house for painting, and to prep for the move to T.O. in August.  Still much packing to do, it’ll be nice to have most of my stuff packed early.  I have so much stuff to give away.  Living alone this month and being unemployed means little interaction with people (my dog is not a person).  During breaks from packing I’ve been enjoying Demetri Martin’s show Important Things with Demetri Martin on Comedy Central.

I finished a song demo (The Owl & The Fox) this weekend for my solo project, and I haven’t posted to my external blog in over a week, oh well.  It snowed today.
